Pasikuda

Trincomalee

One of the world’s finest natural deep water harbours with Pigeon Island National Park snorkelling in 20 metre visibility, a cliffside Hindu temple overlooking the ocean and a resident blue whale population that appears year round in the surrounding waters. Best May to September.

Arugam Bay

A small east coast peninsula with consistent, uncrowded point break surf alongside Kumana Bird Sanctuary, the Pottuvil estuary crocodile safari and Arugam Bay lagoon birdwatching that make it a genuine eco destination beyond the waves alone. Best May to October.

Weligama

A wide, gently shelving bay where Sri Lanka’s best value beginner surf lessons deliver first timers standing in one to two sessions and the working harbour beach at the eastern end runs a daily fish market the tourist circuit rarely visits. Best November to April.

Mirissa

Sri Lanka’s blue whale watching capital where the world’s largest animals pass within a few nautical miles of a crescent beach famous for its coconut palm headland silhouette  day boat fish restaurants on the sand prepare the morning’s haul by the people who caught it. Best November to April.

Galle

A 17th century Dutch fort city still entirely inhabited, where coral stone ramparts enclose cobbled streets lined with independent cafes, gem traders, textile designers and one of the better contemporary art scenes in South Asia  most rewarding at dusk on foot. Best November to April.

Unawatuna

A reef protected horseshoe bay with reliably calm, bright turquoise water and a Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland built by Buddhist monks who walked to the construction site each day one of those quiet discoveries that makes a beach destination feel like more. Best November to April.

Hikkaduwa

Sri Lanka’s most established surf and reef town with a protected coral park starting in knee deep water, hawksbill turtles at predictable morning hours and a compact local atmosphere that is considerably more authentic than its international reputation suggests. Best November to April.

Bentota

A river meetso cean destination where calm lagoon kayaking, the jungle estate of artist Bevis Bawa and a sea turtle hatchery protection programme sit on one bank while reliable surf and water sports fill the ocean side. Best November to April.

Negombo

Seven kilometres from the international airport but a working Dutch canal fishing town with a 5am fish market, 45 kilometres of navigable lagoon waterways through mangrove and paddy and a beachside atmosphere that rewards travellers who give it more than a transit night. Year round.
